It has always been important for Katrine and me to stay in shape. Traveling hasn’t changed that.
Well functioning bodies make it easier and more fun to explore and enjoy life.
Back in 2020 during Covid, I was forced to find an alternative to the gym for a while. Iron Wolf came to the rescue. He showed me that I didn’t need a gym to maintain my strength. I did miss the gym though and returned when I could.
Our initial plan was to just run and do calisthenic workouts during this trip, but after a few months we decided that we needed a proper gym to keep enjoying working out. From then on we have been visiting local gyms on a regular basis. It’s rarely difficult to find one, even in small towns. Many gyms in the US offered us a free “trial” workout if we just needed access for one day. Other places we pay per day or week.
In the US an alternative could be to join Planet Fitness. They are cheap and have well equipped gyms everywhere.
In the bigger scheme of things the costs of visiting gyms have been negligible – especially considering the benefits. It not only helps us to stay fit and strong. Visitors from abroad seem to be a rare occurrence in local gyms, so we are usually met with friendly curiosity. People are helpful and use any excuse to interact. It has proven to be a great way to get to know the locals.
We have continued to go for a run regularly when we have the opportunity. It’s a time efficient and effective cardio workout. On top of that it’s a great way to explore the neighbourhood.
