Both bikes had around 6000 miles/10.000 km on the clock when we got them.

To make sure they were ready for the trip and to get to know them better, I performed service on the bikes before we departed Phoenix.

  • Changed engine oil
  • Replaced oil filter.
  • Replaced air filter
  • Topped off coolant
  • Checked brake pads (they were fine)
  • Installed new chain and sprockets
  • Installed Rally Raid wheel spacers and dust covers front and rear
  • Cleaned and lubed all bearings: Wheels, steering stem, swing arm, rear shock linkage.
  • Lubricated all moving parts

I went over all bolts and nuts to make sure that they were tightened to spec. I added grease/oil/locktight as recommended in the workshop manual.

Katrines bike came with an extra set of tires that I decided to install. It gave me the opportunity to hone my tire changing skills under the watchful eye of Paul who claims to be a master tire changer – I didn’t see anything to contradict it and he taught me several useful tricks and techniques (while I was cursing and sweating profoundly).

For all tasks I used the tools in my toolkit. I did cheat on a few occasions and borrowed some of Paul’s professional tools, but only after having made sure that I could perform the job with what I got. Working on the bikes for more than a week (prep and service) revealed a few shortcomings of my toolkit that I  rectified before we left Phoenix.

With modifications and service out of the way, we mounted the luggage system and the bikes were ready for adventure.
