August 5th 2023 – Prince George, BC
It rained most of the time we stayed in Stewart. We took advantage of a break in the rain to take a stroll around town. The town has its own rugged charm.
It was still drizzling when we left town. The weather improved as we moved inland. As had become the norm we encountered a lot of wildlife during the day. The highlights were a bear with 3 cubs. The cubs found us very interesting and the mother had a hard time getting them off the road. Later we saw a Lynx hunting along the ditch. Late in the afternoon we camped in Historic Hazelton by the Skeena River. We put on running shoes and went exploring. It was an interesting place.
We stopped to enjoy the views and take a few pictures at Hagwilget the next morning.
Yellowhead Highway took us all the way to Prince George. Along the way Katrine stopped to take a picture. Just as she was getting ready to continue, a black bear came bursting out of the forest further up the road. It ran full tilt straight at her until oncoming traffic made it turn around and disappear back into the trees. It really scared her.
In Prince George we were greeted by Kelly, Dave and Mom. It felt like coming home.
We have stayed here for 3 days now.
The bikes have received some well deserved TLC including an oil change. We have gone through our equipment. Everything is holding up well. A few items have proven to be redundant. They will be left behind.
There have been a lot of other guests while we have stayed here. Most friends of the family but also travelers passing through. Katrine and I have been installed in the Master bedroom as Kelly left for the weekend to hang out with old friends a day’s ride from here.
One night Katrine and I cooked a classic Danish dinner for everyone. Mom made pies for dessert. She has been making pies everyday since we arrived. We are not complaining!
Staying put for a few days has allowed me (for the first time) to plan more than a few days ahead. We’ll leave Prince George tomorrow morning. I believe we are in for a treat the next couple of weeks.
